It certainly fits. I mean, everyone knows at least one person that votes for the same party they usually follow regardless of who the candidate actually running is or what her/his policies are?
I wonder, is that better or worse than people that go vote for whichever name or picture they just happen to like best, neither aware nor interested in any of the candidates' platforms?
In the last 3(ish) federal elections that I've participated it, I've consistently voted against the party I don't want in and consequently for their strongest opposition. The party or representative I'd actually prefer to see in power doesn't hardly get a glance.
When you get right down to the nitty gritty of it, democracy's a pretty scary concept, given the relative ignorance of the masses.
George Lakoff makes some interesting connections here. His points boil down to: People vote their values. If the facts don't fit the value frame, they bounce off. If the facts do fit, great!
I read about that study too, Paul .... and it's a shame. A shame that people don't really want to know THE facts, they just want 'facts' that conform with their feelings. The thing is .... "wishing doesn't make it so." Tina http://journals.aol.com/onemoretina/Ridealongwithme
