Chapter 84

I had a couple of things I wanted to ask you all about, but right now I can only remember one. Hopefully the other will come to me.

I'm looking to buy a tenor saxophone for Matthew to play in the high school band. We've rented one each of the last two school years, but for what that will cost over the next four, I figure I can just buy one. I would probably be more interested in a good value for a half decent used one than a cheap new one, but I really have little idea of just what it's going to cost. Is there anyone out there who has any knowledge in the area and can offer some advice?

Paul, best advice - buy locally from a shop with a rep with pro musicians. Good, used machine will cost 2 grand or more. Getting one that has been vetted by the local brass mechanic who stands behind her work, priceless. A "student model" that is in good, used condition may go for as little as $750 to $1000.

If Matthew will play it all the way through HS then it may be worth your while to purchase. If he is thinking of switching instruments or giving up, well, that's a horse of a different smell.

I still have my alto from HS - needs pads and corks, but then again, I haven't played it since college - back when Troglodytes roamed the halls...

what about a pawn shop? they or a music shop know the people who want to sell good instruments. And the music people can give you an estimate on what a good used instrument should cost
Good Luck! I'm glad he wants to play in the band! How cool!
