What it means to be Canadian

Here's an interesting read. If, that is, you're not a Canadian. If you are, you already know this, because you live it every day.
I don't know if I have mentioned it before, but last year, when my wife and I were in Italy, her relatives and their friends who didn't know us very well were continually asking us where we lived. When we told them Canada, they invariably said, "oh, so you're Americans." We would have to explain to them that Canada was a completely separate country, and not a part of the United States. It was clear that many of them simply did not believe us.

I wish I could remember the name of the books I read over twenty years ago which were about the Canadian Air Force during WWI. Really great read.
But, yeah, you can keep Celine. We've got Neil Young. (Ooh, sorry)

Canada has always had my love and thanks... It is possible that you have not gotten the recognition because your press has not actively promoted the information?  I know that Eisenhower really worked the press to his advantage... just a thought...  After my son Fuzzy did his Canada report we were all very impressed with you, our kind northernly neighbor.

However, your experience in Italy although funny does not speak kindly about their education system!

be well,
Dawn

In many places, "American" means that you live in North America, so Canadians and Mexicans are Americans. And considering that the land I am sitting on right now was stolen from Mexico, that makes sense. --Cin

Okay, it was originally scarfed off of the local Native Americans (there's that word again). And the Mormons tended to kill whole wagon trains of folks who were trying to pass through Utah on their way West. (http://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/encyclopedia/entry-detail.aspx?entryID=129)

Hey!  Thanks for visiting my cartoon blog earlier today.  I seriously considered seeking asylum in Canada after W got re-elected  -- but there just aren't all that many greeting card humor writing jobs there.  So I stay here -- fomenting dissent.

When Americans go to Europe, they are told to tell the locals that they are from Canada, so they will be looked on more favorably.  Maybe that's where the error started .... =)    Tina

It's true. I am ignorant too and I think it's because I imagine the culture there being very American'ish somehow... the language that you share and the short distance must have something to do with it too. Hard not to link it with the US
