They call themselves Christians...

An anecdote.

Very good anecdote.

I also liked your letter, and response, regarding the definition of 'atheism'.

That's really quite a story.  I'm curious to know where and when this happened since such tales seem pretty incredible.  My own experience has been closer to the guy who finds 95% of people don't care, some argue politely, and only a tiny segment that gets upset.  I currently live in Texas (the place this person says it's bad to be an atheist), and there's even a weekly call in show called the "Atheist Experience," which you'd think would get all kinds of angry phone calls and rants.  Theyin a calm discussion.

Except for me, my entire family are devoted Catholics, but the worst thing I've ever heard any of them say about Atheists is that "wow, must a lot harder to deal with death."  A fair enough statement in my book.

It might also be the teacher in me that makes it difficult to understand how someone could go through school without a single teacher willing to help.  I'd also like to ask what this person's parents did!  If for years my kid came home beaten up with cuts and bruises every day, I'd move them to a new school or at least make sure the teachers were so sick of me coming in that they'd help my kid whether they liked it or not.  I'm not calling the person a liar, but the story did raise my eyebrows.

Sorry for the double post, but when I read back to how the discussion started, I'm also curious about how the study questions were framed.  The article says:
"From a telephone sampling of more than 2,000 households, university researchers found that Americans rate atheists below Muslims, recent immigrants, gays and lesbians and other minority groups in “sharing their vision of American society.”

I have to wonder if people were given a set choice of who to vote for (as many studies do) or if it was phrased as an open question.  If the former, then who do you pick?

That makes me sick. Fundamentalist, prejudiced nonsense based on religion drives me nuts. Extremes of any idea are bad for the mind and soul and this kind makes everyone miserable.

Thank you for sharing - it was worth the read.

Avoidyour own slippery slope of smugness when commenting on the actions of others whose smugness irritates you.( Plato, 614 AD....or maybe not)  I'm just saying
